Offer Internships to NMBU Students

By hosting students for internships, your business will benefit from motivated students with up-to-date academic skills to assist you with specific tasks and challenges.

Your business may also gain new perspectives and experience the competencies that NMBU students possess. You will contribute to the students acquiring practical and relevant experience, as well as enhancing their learning outcomes in later studies. Offering internships can make your business more attractive and visible to the students at the university. Furthermore, it can lead to collaboration on bachelor’s and master’s theses, or you may find a new colleague. Try an NMBU student!

Useful Information

  • What is an Internship?

An internship is a course (subject) at NMBU where students work in a business for a limited period on an agreed project or other relevant issues. Through the course, students also get the opportunity to systematically reflect on their experiences from the placement in various assignments. The purpose of the course is to link studies more closely to the relevant job market and give students an understanding of how the knowledge they have acquired is used in the relevant work environment. NMBU aims for both the student and the business to mutually benefit from the placement.

Typically, the placement lasts from a few weeks to a few months. It varies whether the student works a full working week for a shorter period or one/more days a week for a longer period.

  • With which Tasks can the Student Assist?

The tasks for the student are agreed upon based on the business’s needs and the student’s competencies. The student should have a relevant academic background to perform the tasks and the tasks should be relevant to the job market the student is training for.

NMBU’s programmes of study cover many different fields. Therefore, the tasks our students can assist with are varied. Some examples of tasks could be:

    • Analysis work (e.g., market, opportunity, political, and economic analyses, etc.)
    • Case processing, report writing, and investigation work (including planning and impact assessments, etc.)
    • Strategy development
    • Laboratory and fieldwork
    • Research (e.g., data collection and analysis, research reporting, etc.)
    • Customer contact and advising
    • Marketing and information work
    • Organizing events
    • Other practical, academically relevant work
  • How to Get Started?
    • Consider what tasks you can offer one/more student(s).
    • Decide how many students you wish to host at the same time.
    • Find the relevant field of study via the link list below and contact the course coordinator or academic advisor for the relevant course/program. They can register you as a potential business and possibly facilitate contact with students.
    • You can also send internship announcements for NMBU students to sit@nmbu.no, and we will share it on our website.
    • If you cannot find what you’re looking for, please email ingrid.aksnes.hjetland[at]nmbu.no for further assistance.
  • What is Expected of Your Business?

    We expect that you:

    • Have relevant issues well-suited for a limited period.
    • Fill in and sign the agreement between the business, the student, and the faculty. The faculty’s template must be used and the agreement must be approved by the study advisor at the faculty before the internship starts.
    • Appoint a supervisor/mentor for the student who will follow up with the student throughout the placement. The follow-up will be tailored to the course the student is taking.
    • Facilitate the student's integration into the work environment.
    • Inform the student about the rules and guidelines that apply to the business's employees (e.g., regulations related to HSE, privacy, and confidentiality).
    • Write a work certificate for the student and confirm to NMBU whether the student meets attendance requirements after the placement/internship.
    • Address any challenges that may arise and contact the supervisor at NMBU if needed.
  • What can You Expect from NMBU?

    You can expect that we:

    • Assess whether the business and tasks are suitable as internships for the student because we are responsible for the quality of the programme of study.
    • Appoint a supervisor at NMBU whom you as a business and the student can contact during the relevant period.
    • Ensure that the supervisor at NMBU follows up on any reports of challenges from you or the student.
  • Salary

The student should not receive any salary for the internship. If the faculty has approved that the student has a work placement in a business where the student has another employment, the student may receive salary for the work that is not part of the internship.

  • Insurance

The student should have the same rights regarding occupational injuries as other employees in the business. Therefore, the business must take out occupational injury insurance for the student during the internship/work placement period, in accordance with the Act relating to industrial injury insurance, section 3 (lov om yrkesskadeforsikring). In the public sector, the student should be given the same rights in this area as other employees. Since public enterprises cannot purchase occupational injury insurance, this falls under the state's self-insurance scheme.
