Teaching and exam period:Teaching will start in the January block, take place in the spring parallel, and end in the June block, with assessment in June. If necessary, the course can also be held in the August block and autumn parallel, with assessment in December.

About this course

The course is for students who are assistant teachers at NMBU. The course contributes to developing the student's skills as an assistant teacher and the ability to reflect on learning and the role of an assistant teacher. The course consists of lectures/learning activities and practice as an assistant teacher. The practical training must be linked to a course in which the student has professional competence.

  • The candidate can explain the principles that can be used as a basis for planning teaching
  • how one can facilitate learning in various ways
  • principles for how to guide individual students and groups
  • different forms of assessment
  • general and subject-specific learning activities in various subjects

Skills:

  • The candidate can reflect on their practice
  • carry out various learning activities related to courses at NMBU
  • collaborate with the subject manager on the practice teacher's work and clarify expectations for the role as practice teacher
  • have a conscious relationship with communication in guidance situations
  • facilitate collaborative learning
  • reflect on their role in teaching situations (guidance, feedback, group work, assessment, diverse student groups and ethics)

  • The candidate are able to seek further resources for the development of their guidance and teaching

  • Learning activities

    The teaching will consist of three parts:

    Part 1: Basic pedagogy and didactics for trainee teachers in an academically relevant subject. Lectures, discussions, group work and role-playing will be relevant forms of learning.

    Part 2: Practice in a relevant subject.

    Part 3: Reflection, developing the practice teacher role based on theory and experience from the subject. Lectures, discussions and group work will be appropriate forms of learning.

  • Teaching support
    Students are supervised in compulsory activities and in discussions of their experiences as assistant teachers.
  • Prerequisites
    The students are assumed to have the professional competence to be an assistant teacher in the introductory course where the student is assistant teacher. The student must have achieved the grade C or better in the introductory course in which the student will have practical training.
  • Assessment method

    Individual written assignment in which the candidate reflects on his role as a assistant teacher, his own development and suggestions for improvements in the subject's teaching.

    The student must participate 80% in the teaching.

    Participate in an introductory meeting about the assistant teacher work in the introductory course in their subject.

    Students will have practical training as assistant teachers in a course at NMBU 2-6 hours a week.

    29 hours of lecture/plenary activities and 15 hours of practice.
  • Admission requirements

    Access to practice during the course.

    Completed course in which the student will have practical training with a grade of C or better.
