Situated on the coast of Bar Harbor, Maine, College of the Atlantic is a small institution founded in 1968 based environmental sustainability in mind and the idea of human ecology. With a total of 350 students, the institution ensures the closeness of a small community. College of the Atlantic approach is interdisciplinary and experiential with a wide vary of programmes of interest across numerous areas of study.

Agreement established in 2023 through faculty of BIOVIT.
The agreement applies for students from all subject areas.

1 to 2 semester.
Who can apply
Applicants are ranged according to their average grade scores upon applying. Minimum C average requires.
All exchanges require a completion of 60ECTS prior to a stay abroad.
All students must comply with the mandatory MMR vaccine policy.

- TOEFL (paper-based test: minimum score 600 , 5 (TWE-test of written English) or 89 (internet-based test-with no individual scoring below 21).

*Note based on trisemesters. NMBU students on exchange to COA are required to be registered for full time studies, which is equal to 3 courses per trimester and equivalent to 20ECTS at NMBU. 10 week semesters.
Fall semester: September to November
Winter term: January to March Spring term. April to June

Tuition fees
Students travelling through the agreement are exempt from tuition fees.
Recognition of credits
NMBU students on exchange to COA are required to be registered for full time studies, which is equal to 3 courses per trimester and equivalent to 20ECTS at NMBU. NMBU students are not able to complete 30ECTS in the equivalent of only a NMBU fall or spring exchange.
*NMBU students will not get ECT approval for freshman year courses.

Visa and resident permit
All students who intend to study in USA must have student visa.
It is the student’s own responsibility to apply for a visa. A first step would therefore be to acquire information from the relevant country’s embassy.
Study visa: A student visa is necessary in order to study in the USA. You have to first receive a letter of acceptance from the host university before you can apply. The visum processing fee is currently USD $160, and the SEVIS registration fee is USD $350 for F-1 applicants and $220 for J-1 applicants. The universities in the USA will issue a document for students to obtain either the F1 or the J1 visa.
The universities in the USA require that students use either the F1 or the J1 visa.
NOTE J1 visa: Be aware that this carries a clause whereby the applicant faces a two-year ‘quarantine’ period after the initial residence period, in which the applicant cannot apply for a permanent work or residence permit in the USA. However, this does only apply if the student received public funding, such as from Lånekassen.

Health Insurance in the US
American universities have strict requirements for students’ health insurance. All students are studying in the USA should expect to purchase private health insurance recommended by the host university. This health insurance might be in addition to other (travel) insurances purchases by the student in Norway or abroad. University health insurance plans range from USD$ 500-1200 but can cost more.
