Today, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden opens the IUFRO World Congress 2024 - one of the world's largest meeting places for researchers and professionals in forest science. NMBU is co-organizer.

On Monday, June 24th, His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden opens the IUFRO World Congress 2024, which takes place in Stockholm. The event brings together leading scientists and experts from all over the world to discuss forest science and the sector's contribution to a sustainable future.

"We are very excited that the King of Sweden will open the congress," says NMBU's Professor Hans Fredrik Hoen.

He represents the university in the organizing committee that welcomes more than 4000 delegates to Stockholm this week.

Extensive Program

The theme of the congress is "Forests and Society Towards 2050". The spotlight is on innovative solutions for the rapid societal development towards 2050. The program consists of more than 200 scientific sessions.

The panelists come from Central America, Africa, Asia, and Europe, and have a very diverse background. Several scientists from NMBU will participate. They will, among other things, talk about forest inventory, thinning practices, flat logging, and earth's respiration, radioactive radiation and tree growth, as well as risk and uncertainty in the forest sector.

In addition, a number of complementary activities are organized, from expeditions to tree planting ceremonies.

The key to a sustainable future

A highlight of the congress is the completion of the Nordic and Baltic countries' contribution to the congress's declaration. This document discusses the role of the forest as a driver of economic growth, a tool to sustain life on earth, and a factor to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. The declaration will be presented on the final day of the congress.

To reach a global audience, all events at the main arena, including the opening and closing ceremonies, will be live-streamed. You can read more about this here: https://iufro2024.com/live-streaming/.
