Open Access

Here you will find information regarding national goals and guidelines to Open Access and Open Access in EU projects. Open access to scientific publications (Open Access) is achieved through Gold Open Access, Green Open Access or via the read and publish agreements with publishers Elsevier, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, SpringerNature, Sage, American Chemical Society (ACS) and Oxford University Press. On this page you will find further information about the Open Access policy at NMBU, nationally and internationally/EU.

  • National Goals and Guidelines for Open Access to research articles

NMBU follows the current national policy and guidelines for open access. Publication and open access to scientific publications follow the Ministry of Education's requirements, and the requirements that follow from Plan S. Prinsipper og forvaltning av åpen tilgang til vitenskapelige publikasjoner ved NMBU (revisjon vedtatt av rektor 25, september 2019) (only in Norwegian).

The researchers themselves are responsible for:

    • Familiarizing yourself with current agreements for open publishing.
    • Self-archiving scientific articles in Cristin in line with the journal's/publisher's current guidelines for self-archiving.

The government's goals are that all publicly funded research articles should be made openly available by 2024. The government has established guidelines and measures for open access to research articles.

Brage NMBU is the university's open archive and covers all subject areas at the university. Master theses and doctoral theses must be deposited in Brage by the author. For doctoral dissertations, the post-print versions of an accepted article must be included if the article unless the article is published with a CC BY 4.0 license. For articles in subscription journals published by Elsevier and Wiley, which are in line with the Sikt agreement to which NMBU participates, the publisher's pdf can be self-archived/uploaded.

The university library assists the faculties, students, and staff with information about open publishing, copyright, licensing, and publication fees in the form of courses, training and guidance.

  • Opportunities for open publishing (Open Access)
    1. Gold Open Access
The author of a scientific work decides for himself whether he/she wants to publish his work in an Open Access journal. Researchers can find open access journals in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers.

Gold Open Access articles are published in journals where all the articles are open and with a fully open license (CC-BY). For these articles, the publisher's pdf (published version) can be self-archived in Cristin.
    2. Publish openly in journals via the Read-and-Publish agreements.
The following publishers are included in the agreements: Elsevier, Springer, Taylor & Francis, American Chemical Society (ACS), SAGE, Oxford University Press, and Wiley.
      - Corresponding author must be an employee or student at NMBU.
      - Articles published openly with a CC BY 4.0 license can be shared freely.
      - NB! not all journals published by these publishers are included in the agreements. Look up the journal in the Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers to see if it is covered by an agreement that NMBU takes part in.
    3. Green Open Access - archiving in open institutional archive
      - Green Open Access means that scientific articles are published in a closed subscription journal, or a gold Open Access journal and then made available by self-archiving (uploading) in Cristin for later availability in the institutional archive NMBU Brage.
      - For articles published in a closed subscription journal, it is the last accepted manuscript version after peer review (post-print) that must be uploaded and archived. The post-print version is identical to the publisher's pdf, but without the journal's logo and layout.
    4. Hybrid publishing
A hybrid article is a scientific work that is published in a closed subscription journal. The author can then redeem the scientific work and make it open through a publication charge (APC).

  • What do the research funders demand?
    • The Research Council and the EU require open access to all scientific articles that are the result of research with their funding.
    • It is encouraged to choose a journal with open access (Gold Open Access) or to publish through the national Read-and-Publish agreements.
    • Green Open Access is also a good alternative.

  • Open Access in EU

OpenAIRE is a network of Open Access repositories, archives and journals that support Open Access policies. OpenAIRE has started out as a policy support mechanism for the EC (FP7 pilot and H2020 OA policies), with the aim to be the European scholarly communication hub providing its services to many European funders.
