WRITING Papers AND
making REFERENCE LISTS

Use of EndNote for scientific texts and different reference styles

Here you will find guides in referencing, various reference styles, and help for using EndNote. We have also collected links to useful pages about writing.

In order to write a good thesis or scientific text, it is important to state which sources you have used.

To refer is to provide accurate information about the sources you have used, both in the text you write and in the bibliography.

Reference styles - citiation and literature lists

  • What is a reference style?

Reference styles are predefined rules describing how to cite sources and set up literature lists. The two most common types are author-year style (f. ex. Harvard, APA) or numeric style (f. ex. Vancouver). You can find these and many other styles in EndNote. In addition, scientific journals often have their own styles.

  • Reference styles for NMBU-students

Some styles are not default in EndNote and you must download them. There are various styles used by NMBU-students, mainly APA7th, Harvard NMBU or Vancouver.

    • English APA7th style is available in EndNote.
    • Norwegian APA7th style can be downloadet from SIKT (EndNote) or HVL (Zotero)

EndNote

  • What is EndNote?

With EndNote, you can retrieve references from various literature databases such as Oria and Web of Science. The program is used together with Word, so that you can insert citations at the desired place in a text and easily create a bibliography based on the references in your document.

EndNote is a useful aid when writing articles, master's theses etc. The program contains a number of reference styles that are used to define the appearance of bibliography.

  • Installing EndNote

Important! Do not save or back up your EndNote library to a cloud environment such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive or iCloud. This will eventually corrupt or damage your library.

Access to EndNote on an NMBU computer

On most NMBU machines, EndNote is already installed, or the program can be installed via the software portal (Software Center on your desktop).
