How does development infringe on human rights and what might the future hold? Welcome to the NMBU Annual Global Development Studies Lecture 2023 with human rights expert, Peris Jones.

Time: Friday 3 November, 12:00-14:00
Place: U227, Clock Building, NMBU

The emergence of human rights within development has been the focus of key debates and policies over the last couple of decades. Whilst many states in the global south are profoundly pro-development, human rights are under severe pressure and contestation in all corners of the globe.

Development and human rights constitute two essentially contested concepts, giving us pause for thought. What is the track-record of development and human rights? Where do recent challenges now leave rights-based approaches to development?

In this talk, Peris Jones (Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, University of Oslo) will discuss his recently published monography, Human Rights and Development (Routledge, 2023). Jones invites you to explore three over-arching themes:

1. Why and how have human rights made a breakthrough in terms of development?

2. Is there agreement on human rights as a concept and how it is being used and understood within diverse development practices at global, national and local levels?

3. How can we gauge the impact of human rights-based approaches on development outcomes?

The event will conclude with a discussion on what the future might hold for human rights and development.

The event is open to all and free of charge.
