THT310 Analysis and Design of Water and Wastewater Treatment Processes

Credits (ECTS):10

Course responsible:Harsha Chandima Ratnaweera

Campus / Online:Taught campus Ås

Teaching language:Engelsk

Course frequency:Annually

Nominal workload:For a course of 10 credits, ca. 250 hours of work is anticipated. Thus 10 - 15 hours/week of independent study should be expected.

Teaching and exam period:This course starts in the autumn parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation in autumn parallel.

About this course

This course prepares candidates for practicing the knowledge of water and wastewater treatment technologies in the conceptual design and dimensioning of unit processes. Based on THT271 and THT280, this course provides breadth and depth of knowledge and conceptual skills that allow graduates to function as designers. This course has a substantial part in engineering calculations. The course will address both water and wastewater treatment.

Technologies (examples):

  • Filtration
  • Sedimentation
  • Coagulation and flocculation
  • Biological processes
  • Membrane separation
  • Disinfection
  • Biogas production

Applications (examples)

  • Design of treatment facilities
  • Upgrading of treatment facilities
  • Resource recovery and reuse
  • Process surveillance
  • Process optimisation and control
  • Digitalisation of the utilities

In this course, you will be working on designing treatment processes and technological units. You will be able to follow-up case-studies, for example, developed in the course assignment for THT271.

Learning outcome

At the completion of this course, candidates will be able to:

  • Recognise the design principles of water and wastewater treatment technologies
  • Explain the physical and chemical basis of water and wastewater treatment processes and technological equipment
  • Identify calculation principles of technological equipment
  • Perform basic design calculations of water and wastewater treatment processes and equipment
  • Analyse water and wastewater treatment flowsheets
  • Categorise water and wastewater treatment equipment
  • Critique water and wastewater treatment technologies
  • Design water and wastewater treatment technologies and equipment
  • (1) Lectures (2) Term papers with reports and presentations, (3) Tutorials with process simulation software, (4) Mandatory excursion to treatment plant(s) to learn how the unit processes are integrated and their operational challenges. Most of the presentations will be available in Canvas before the lectures.
  • By email and pre-agreed meetings with the lecturers.
  • THT271 and THT280.
  • Combined assessment, based on:

    • Term paper, which counts for 40 %
    • Digital campus-based written exam (3 hours) during the exam period, which counts for 60 %. The exam can include both multiple-choice questions and other questions. Aids code A1 (no calculator, no other aids).

    Grading rule: A - F

Written exam Grading: Letter grades Permitted aids: A1 No calculator, no other aids Term paper Grading: Letter grades
  • The external examiner approves plans for the project work and its assessment. The external and internal examiner jointly prepare the exam questions and the grading guide. The external examiner reviews the internal examiner's assessment of a random sample of candidates as a calibration at certain intervals according to the faculty's guidelines for exam grading.
    • Term paper with presentation (the term paper counts towards the grade)
    • Excursions to treatment plant(s)
    • Lectures: Approx. 50 hours (4 hours/week)
    • Exercise sessions/supervision: Approx. 25 hours (2 hours/week)
    • Excursion 6 hours
    • In addition: Presentation and discussion of term papers
  • REALFAG (special requirements in science)
