About this course

Biomass from forests as industrial raw material - technologies, quality and applications. Timber sales and timber scaling - scaling rules, scaling methods, volume and value calculation, methods for measuring biomass from forest. Industrial production - technologies, processes, material properties. Industrial conversion of biomass - technologies, products, product properties. Wood as an energy carrier - bioenergy. Circular value chains, material flows and carbon storage.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: Students should have a good understanding of current productions based on biomass from forests: mechanical wood processing, pulp & paper and conversion of biomass and which raw materials are suitable for different products. Students should understand how carbon is bound in wood products and be able to evaluate issues related to carbon storage in wood products. Students should understand the connections within value chains in the forestry sector, and be able to apply principles from circular and linear value chains to the forestry sector. Students should understand production technologies, processing and sales of products based on biomass from forests.

Skills: Students should be able to calculate the volume and value of raw materials from forests. Students should independently collect and process data on production and value creation in the forest-based value chain.

General competence: Students should have a good understanding of forest resources and be able to evaluate forest-based biomass as raw material in industrial applications. Students should have a good understanding of the forestry industry's products and be able to evaluate the products' practical application as well as climate properties.
