About this course

Forest as a resource. Basics of forest botany. Basics of forest resource inventory emphasizing timber resources and biomass for energy production. Basics of forest biology (ecology, dynamics and human interventions). Introduction to growth and forest dynamics. Basics of forest economics.

Learning outcome

After completing the course the student should have:

Knowledge:

  • Basic knowledge of forest management within the fields of forest biology, silviculture, forest mensuration, forest production and forest economy.

Skills:

  • A basis for deciding a forest's vegetation type and from this the level of productivity.
  • Knowledge of the use of equipment and tables to estimate the volume of single trees and forest stands.

General competence:

  • A basis for a deliberate attitude to the role of being a forest manager and for interdisciplinary problem solving in forest management.
  • Learning activities
    • Lectures, excursion, group work and field exercises, as well as independent study are used to achieve learning results in knowledge and understanding.
    • Field exercises and calculation exercises are used to achieve learning results in skills.
    • The excursion and lectures are used to achieve learning results in attitudes and ethics.
    • Projects are used to achieve results in skills and understanding, in addition to learn how to work in groups and how to present the results of a work.
  • Teaching support
    Advance information is publicly available in Canvas. The lecturers are available for questions during office hours.
  • Assessment method

    Combined assessment:

    • Individual exercises in forest botany (30%).
    • Final written exam (70%).

    All the evaluated elements of the course must be passed to get the course approved.

  • Examiner scheme
    Internal sensor.
  • Mandatory activity
    The entire August block including excursions and field exercises, and at least three compulsory assignments and the group exercises (prosjektoppgaven) must be passed.
  • Notes

    Students who want to take the course must apply for admission in Studentweb no later than the 5th of August. After that, the places in the course will be distributed.

    Students who don't come to the first lecture in August will lose their seat in the course. Available seats will be given to students on the waiting list after the first lecture.

  • Teaching hours
    Excursion (August block): 3 days. Field exercises (August block): up to 5 days. Lectures: 4 hours per week (Autumn parallel).
