About this course
The course is an introduction to the professional education of landscape architect and landscape engineer. The course gives an introduction to the profession's working methods, distinctiveness and width. The students are introduced to the basics of the profession; natural elements, construction technology, design, history and professional language.
Learning outcome
The students will have basic knowledge of:
- the professions' importance for people's perception of the landscape, well-being, and movement through
- the history of the professions
- professional terminology
- different types of landscapes
- factors that influence the quality of natural and built landscapes
- how a landscape is built, managed, operated and maintained
- tools and methodology
- occupational Safety and Health
The students will have basic skills in:
- identifying, systematizing and conveying observations of the natural and built landscapes
- applying specialist knowledge and academic language to practical and theoretical issues
- justifying academic decisions
- visualizing and communicating landscapes and facilities
- modeling terrain
- handling workshop tools and machines
The students will have general competence in:
- combining problem solving and own reflections in assignments
- reflecting critically on the profession's contribution to sustainable social development
The students are expected to:
- take notes from lectures and excursions
- read litterature and seek supervision
- reflect and discuss presented topics in class
- summarize and present topics to peers
- practice typical, Professional methods
- express a holistic approach in assignments
- come up with solutions on given tasks
- present projects graphically and orally
- work individually and in groups
- The students are offered supervision one by one or in gruops. Canvas is utilized for information assignment hand-outs, etc.

Assignment for Landscape Construction and Management (B-LI) Grading: Passed / Not Passed Portfolio for Landscape Architecture (M-LA) Grading: Passed / Not Passed - External examinors evaluate the course outline, some of the assignments and some of the student work.
The student must
- attend 80% of exercises
- attend construction practice all days
- submit and pass all assignments
- attend reviews
- undergo safety training for operating machinery
- Expenses for excursions are covered by the student.
- Aproximately: Estimated 150-170 hours structured devided on lectures, exercises, plenary reviews with critiques and discussionsin, excursions.
- Students enrolled in the M-LA and B-LI have priority.
- Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
