"My student exchange has been an incredible journey that has changed my life and greatly advanced my goals, both academically and professionally".

Greetings from Emmanuel Okello, a Gulu University student pursuing a Master's degree in food security and community nutrition in Uganda. I am a participant in NORPART, a joint student exchange programme offered by the Centre for African Research, Makerere University, Gulu University, and NMBU.

A warm welcome

As I made my way to the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), it seemed like there was something exciting and new to explore every minute. The peculiar surroundings of the efficient and well-organized Norwegian infrastructure - a reflection of the country's reputation for timeliness and orderliness - stimulated my senses as we were leaving the airport.

Faculty members and the mentors for international students at NMBU made me feel welcome and at home from the moment I arrived. The students, who were primarily from Norway, were amiable, personable, and ready to share their culture.

This collaborative environment encouraged me to delve deeper into the unknown to learn more. The university's state-of-the-art research tools, industry ties, and technology impressed me.

Beautiful campus

The campus's natural beauty, complemented by lovely, thick woodlands and undulating hills, offer a serene setting for study and contemplation. Outside the college boundaries, the charming town of Ås enchanted me with its scenic streets, historically significant buildings, and lively community spirit providing chances for exploration and learning.

My academic adventure at NMBU has been nothing short of thrilling, full of hands-on learning opportunities, collaborative learning, and intellectual stimulation that have expanded my viewpoint and improved my comprehension of my field. I took a variety of courses that matched my academic interests and professional goals, broadening my understanding of a range of dynamics. Every course provided a different approach to combining theoretical understanding with real-world application. The instructors were committed guides who encouraged students to think critically and with curiosity. In order to guarantee interdisciplinary learning, which is two way, the students worked together.

To my surprise, the pastor led church for no more than three hours as a fellowship with a smaller group. The fellowship time saw increased congregation interaction following the preaching, which makes it special. Unity in variety is demonstrated by the church's frequent composition of diverse members from many countries.

Norway is a costly country. Therefore, in order to maximize satisfaction, every dollar must be spent wisely both individually and as a community. All people have a daily schedule, which demonstrates that time management is a standard in all facets of life. Train and bus drivers are two more examples of people who put time efficiency ahead of passenger count. The Norwegian people have always shown respect for one another, which is demonstrated in the community and in schools. Peace among the members is cultivated as a result. Furthermore, car drivers prioritise pedestrians at zebra crossings, indicating that the people follow the rules strictly.

The trip to the frigid Oslofjord waters in Drøbak was one of the most fantastic experiences; despite the cold, most of the students were eager to have fun and unwind. These instances show how students combine work and life, engage in outdoor activities, and adopt sustainable living habits.

Overcoming obstacles

As a student used to a different academic system, I ran into some challenges adapting to the new educational structure, including periods of self-doubt and irritation. But I was able to overcome these obstacles and succeed in my studies by being persistent and asking for help from colleagues and lectures.

To sum up, my exchange at NMBU has been an incredible journey that has changed my life, greatly advanced my goals in both my academic and professional life, and broadened my insights on many different cultures.
