To be admitted to the PhD programme in Science and Technology, you need to have financing, a master degree with good grades, as well as documented English competence, both written and oral.

The PhD programme in Science and Technology qualifies for independent research of international standard in all subject areas at the Faculty of Science and Technology, in accordance with recognized principles of academic freedom and research ethics.

Career opportunities

A PhD degree is the highest level of formalized education in Norway. A doctoral degree from NMBU will qualify for positions in higher education and research, as well as in public and private sectors.

Our doctors continue to universities and research institutes around the world, as well as to leading positions in the private business and public sector.

  • Program structure

    The PhD education has a nominal duration of three years full time studies. An individual education plan of minimum 30 ECTS are to support the individual research work, scheduled to 2,5 years. Some have a fourth year of duty work, most commonly teaching duties at bachelor or master level.  

    The faculty has a broad academic portfolio and extensive research activity in the natural sciences and technology as well as educational sciences.  

    The PhD programme provides expertise and specialisation in one of the faculty's areas of research and consists of the following programme options:
