Requirements:

To be admitted to the PhD programme in Science and Technology, you need to have financing, a master degree with good grades, as well as documented English competence, both written and oral.

  • Requirements in detail

    Admission requirements are given in NMBU's PhD regulations, Section 5-2 – Admission requirements – education and English language requirements.

    The Faculty of Science and Technology requires:

    1. Strong academic background with a relevant master’s degree (minimum 120 credits, based on a bachelor’s degree on minimum 180 credits, or an integrated master’s degree of minimum 300 ECTS).

    To be accepted for admission to the PhD programme at The Faculty of Science and Technology, the applicant must have:

    • Grade B or above on the master’s thesis
    • Average grade B or above on courses included in the master’s degree (120 credits), and
    • Average grade C or above on courses included in the bachelor’s degree (180 credits).


    Candidates who do not meet the requirements may in particular cases be admitted based on an individual assessment. If so, the potential main supervisor will have to recommend admission.

    2. Documented English skills in line with NMBU's PhD regulations, Section 5-2(3). Candidates who do not meet these requirements may in particular cases be admitted based on an individual assessment. If so, the potential main supervisor will have to recommend admission.

    3. Funding for the whole PhD education period must be documented.

The PhD programme in Science and Technology qualifies for independent research of international standard in all subject areas at the Faculty of Science and Technology, in accordance with recognized principles of academic freedom and research ethics.

Career opportunities

  • Learning outcomes

    On completion of the PhD programme, the new doctor has the following a) knowledge, b) skills and c) general competence:


    a) The doctor

    • is at the forefront of knowledge in the chosen programme option within sciences and technology and has a systematic understanding of scientific theories and methods in the field
    • is able to assess and analyse different theories, methods and processes in research and in development projects in the field, also from an international perspective
    • is able to contribute to the development of new knowledge, new theories and methods within her/his field


    b) The doctor

    • is able to formulate critical questions and to design and implement research at an internationally high level within her/his field
    • masters the use of scientific equipment, instruments, analysis tools and relevant statistical methods of her/his field
    • has contributed through original research to new knowledge that merits publication in national or international refereed journals
    • is able to handle interdisciplinarity and complexity, create an overview, and synthesise scientific information
    • is capable of critical analysis and offering constructive criticism on scientific work within her/his field


    c) The doctor

    • is able to carry out her/his research with professional and ethical integrity, and to identify relevant ethical concerns
    • is able to disseminate research and development work through recognised national and international channels and to take part in scientific debates on international arenas
    • is able to disseminate his/her research findings to the business sector, the authorities and public administration, as well as to the general
    • is able to place her/his own research in broader academic and societal contexts
    • is able to assess the need for, to initiate and if appropriate stimulate, innovation within her/his field
  • Program structure

    The PhD education has a nominal duration of three years full time studies. An individual education plan of minimum 30 ECTS are to support the individual research work, scheduled to 2,5 years. Some have a fourth year of duty work, most commonly teaching duties at bachelor or master level.  

    The faculty has a broad academic portfolio and extensive research activity in the natural sciences and technology as well as educational sciences.  

    The PhD programme provides expertise and specialisation in one of the faculty's areas of research and consists of the following programme options:

    • Learning activities
      The PhD programme in Science and Technology educates researchers who through their final PhD thesis contribute to new scientific knowledge. The independent research work is to meet international standards with respect to academic level, ethical requirements, and methods within the field.

      The PhD education takes place in an active academic environment, under individual supervision. The education is internationally targeted, requiring publications in leading journals and participation in international courses and conferences.
