Research Ethics Committee at NMBU
The Research Ethics Committee is NMBU's committee for investigating cases of research misconduct. The committee shall promote awareness of research ethics and provide advice and information on research ethics issues and cases.
Mandate and composition
Composition:
- Four members in academic positions and four deputy members in academic positions appointed by the rector
- One external member with a personal deputy appointed by the rector
- Two student representatives appointed by the student democracy
- Two representatives of PhD candidates appointed by the Society of Doctoral Candidates at NMBU (SoDoc)
- A representative of technical and administrative staff appointed by the Director of Administration
The Research Ethics Committee follows the University Board's term of office. The members are appointed for four years at a time, with the exception of the representatives of the students and PhD-candidates, who are appointed for one year. The rector appoints the committee chair, while the committee elects its own deputy chair.
The committee should have broad research expertise, one of the members should have legal expertise and at least one member should have ethical expertise. It is desirable to have experience in the Committee from other ethical bodies, including national research ethics committees.
The composition of the Research Ethics Committee is as follows when dealing with cases of research misconduct: four members in an academic position, as well as one external member.
When dealing with cases concerning students, the student representatives take office in the Research Ethics Committee. When dealing with integrity cases concerning PhD-candidates, the representatives of the doctoral research fellows take up their seats in the Research Ethics Committee. In addition, the committee may, if necessary, appoint up to two experts who can assist the committee in the case.
The secretariat for the Research Ethics Committee will be assigned to the Department of Research, Innovation and External Cooperation.
Mandate:
The Research Ethics Committee (FEU) safeguards NMBU's functions in accordance with Sections 5 and 6 of the Research Ethics Act.
FEU will be a driving force in promoting ethical awareness among employees at NMBU and provide advice and information on ethical issues and cases. The purpose of the Research Ethics Committee is to promote knowledge about, interest in and debate about ethics and philosophy of science at NMBU.
FEU will contribute to ensuring that research ethics is systematically incorporated into the research and graduate education at NMBU and that ethics is included in quality assurance processes for research activities and the graduate education at NMBU.
The Research Ethics Committee is also NMBU's committee for investigationg scientific misconduct. The Committee prepares routines for, and deals with, cases of scientific misconduct. In addition, FEU will promote measures to prevent misconduct at the university.
The Research Ethics Committee shall keep itself informed on national and international research ethics issues, and relevant ethical issues in public administration and international regulations.
