About the project
Objective
The overall objective of this project is to contribute towards improving sustainable production and utilization of renewable bioenergy to improve the livelihood and quality of life of rural households in Ethiopia through exploring potential bioenergy sources and building the capacity of production and utilization of bioenergy. These will be realized through replacement of unsustainable utilization of kerosene with biofuel, wood and charcoal with biogas for cooking and lighting; the application of high-value organic fertilizer from bio-slurry to soils for crop production; and enhancing the adaptive capacity of rural households to climate change.
Identification, quantification, and quality determination of available bioenergy sources for sustainable production will be the core activities of the project to achieve these goals. In this respect, the project will take strengthening the teaching and research capacity of partner institutions in the LMIC as its core activity. This will be done through training, staff exchange and procurement of equipment and chemicals.
Moreover, the project promotes gender equity by preferential support to female household heads, students and staff to improve their participation in science, policy and decision making. It will also attempt to strengthen Ethiopia’s policy and strategies of renewable bioenergy production and utilization as alternative to imported petroleum energy sources.
