About this course

Chemistry plays an important role in domestic life, and you will learn about the compounds we and our environment consists of and how environmental pollution affects both nature and man.

Bachelor's students in Chemistry have the opportunity to write a bachelor thesis within a relevant research area. The thesis is developed in consultation / collaboration with supervisor(s) within one of the chemistry fields at NMBU.

The thesis is an independent, academic work equivalent to a half semester. It may include literature study, laboratory work, fieldwork, processing and analyzing data. The thesis will be structured in line with academic standards. Students receive supervison in this work.

Learning outcome

KNOWLEDGE: Having written a 15 credits' Bachelor's thesis, the student has gained knowledge about a specific topic and relevant theories, processes, tools and methods.

SKILLS: The student has got skills in finding, evaluating and referring to information and present this so addressing the problem. Moreover, the student has gained skills in applying scientific knowledge, make reasoned choices and handeled relevant professional tools, techniques and forms of expression.

GENERAL COMPETENCE: The student has, under guidance, gained expertise in planning and conducting an independent project and dissemination of academic issues.

Learning activities
The student is entitled to 20 hours of supervision (including assessment of the Bachelor`s thesis).
Teaching support
Students are encouraged to use available courses and information at the University Library and the Writing Center at NMBU.
Prerequisites
Completed 120 credits and good background knowledge in the relevant issue.
Assessment method
Written assignment. A final oral presentation and discussion is part of the assessment.
Examiner scheme
Internal and external examiner assesses the Bachelor's thesis and the oral presentation and discussion.
Mandatory activity
The completed contract between the student and the supervisor (s), with a detailed timetable, handed in at the Faculty before work on the Bachelor`s thesis can begin.
Notes
Agreement on thesis work must be handed in no later that 15 September the semester before the thesis work is performed.
The main supervisor must be a scientific employee at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.
Co-supervisors may be employed at other universities or external research institutions / industry. Co-supervisors must be approved by the main supervisor and the responsible Faculty. The total hours of supervision are to be divided between all supervisors.
Teaching hours
The student works 375 hours with the thesis over one semester.

Third-year students in the study program Bachelor in Chemistry.
