About the study place

Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE) is a research, education and cooperation centre in Costa Rica working to improve the livelihoods of residents in rural agricultural areas in Central- and South America. More precisely, the aim is to find a balance between sustainable agricultural production and land conservation. The centre is located in Turrialba, around two hours from the capital San José. Turrialba is also the name of an active volcano located in the Turrialba Volcano National Park.

    Master level.

    Requirements:

    As part of the process and of the information required, the exchange student must contact (directly with the person) one of CATIE’s specialists, professors, or Academic Coordinators in his/her area of interest and explore the possibility of having technical support/supervision for his/her research project,
    graduate study, internship, in-service training, specialized study, or graduate courses in which the student is interested. On CATIE’s website www.catie.ac.cr; ¿En qué trabajamos? there is a list of the areas CATIE works on as well as a list of CATIE staff according to their area of expertise. Additionally, the student must indicate the name and email address of the supervising professor, researcher, or coordinator of the exchange student activity in the home institution.

  • Who can apply

    Applicants are ranged according to their average grade scores upon applying. Master level.

    All exchanges require a completion of 60ECTs prior to a stay abroad.

  • Tuition fees

    Students studying using this agreement must pay a tuition fee of ca. 250 USD per credit, in addition to other fees; in each trimester nine credits must be taken.

  • Language of Instruction

    Spanish (all Master level courses taught in Spanish)

    Language requirements

    Spanish: Minimum beginner proficiency

    English
    Upper Secondary school (‘videregående’ in Norwegian): Average minimum score of 4, or

    TOEFL: Minimum score 213 (computer-based test), or 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based), with no sub-scores of below 21, plus a minimum TWE score of 5.

  • Semester timing

    First trimester: March– start of June.
    Second trimester: mid-June - start of September
    Third trimester: mid -September – start of December

  • Recognition of study credits

    36 credits at CATIE correspond to 60 credits at NMBU. To be more precise, 1 CATIE credit corresponds to 1.67 NMBU credits.
