About this course
In this course, the main emphasis will be placed on the issues relating to the electricity grid system. The grid tariff and impact grid on investment decisions will be examined. Furthermore, issues related to environmental issues of grid planning and construction will be discussed. The benefits and shortcomings of selected energy storage systems will be discussed.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
After completing the course, the student should be able to
- Describe load profile for energy (electricity) users and generators.
- Explain impact of load profile on planning and distribution of energy resources.
- Explain the importance of load factor on making investment decision on establishment of power plants, and setting cost of energy.
- Explain economic dispatch problem and merit-order approach.
- Explain motivation for using high voltage for electricity transmission.
- Calculate cross-sectional area of conductor and transmission voltage for overhead transmission lines.
- Analyse a simple 3-node power system.
- Explain electricity transmission and distribution planning stages.
- Discuss different types of energy storage systems
Skills
After the completion of the course, the student will able
- To plot load profile for energy users and generators, and design power plant to meet load requirement.
- To evaluate electricity transmission and distribution system projects.
- To implement energy storage facilities for different users and applications.
General competence
The student shall be able to communicate and discuss issues related to planning of electricity distribution. Furthermore, student will know how to select appropriate storage systems for specific application from economic and technical point of views.
