Title: Wealth Inequality: Causes, Composition and Challenges for Tax-Transfer Systems

Abstract: This paper presents some empirical research on wealth inequality, its composition and causes in Australia, and then discusses the challenges that this presents for taxes and transfers. An understanding of the factors primarily responsible for wealth distribution dynamics will contribute to our understanding of the causes and potential solutions of growing wealth inequality and potential directions for reform. The paper identifies a range of economic and non-economic factors including population ageing, home ownership, and human capital, on wealth inequality in Australia. The paper brings a gender lens to the problem by focusing not only on wealth but also on changing dependency and care needs.
