About this course

Machines and equipment for various processing techniques. Wood and water, dimension stability. Dynamic transport of water in wood. Water content and temperature. Wood protection - modification, impregnation, surface treatment and glueing. Planning of production and logistics. Sawing simulation, lumber recovery and lumber yield. Production economy, cost allocation and profitability analysis.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The students should have knowledge about the sawmilling industry in Norway, and how the business structure has developed over the last decades.

Skills: The students should be able to describe methods, machinery and equipment used in the wood industry for processing, drying and modification of wood and wood-based products. They should gain an understanding of relevant surface coatings, impregnation methods, and glueing of wood, and how these treatments influence the utilisation of wood. The students should also learn to plan and control different production processes in the wood and sawmilling industry.

General competence: The students should understand which opportunities the sawmilling companies have for adapting production, products and markets in the future.

  • Learning activities
    Lectures, exercises, more and less extensive written assignments plus excursions. The exercises are used to concretise the theoretical material. The students present some of the papers in class.

    Written exam (3 hours).

    The exam is graded by an external examiner.

    All written assignments. Participation in minimum 3/4 of the excursions is required to sit for the examination.
